Beautiful dreamers were gathered at LACMA. I was very lucky to see them!

The 175 works in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art’s exhibition “In Wonderland: The Surrealist Adventures of Women Artists in Mexico and the United States” presented the work of 47 female surrealists—some marginalized, some muses, and all extraordinary. Frida Kahlo portrays herself in miniature alongside her “greater” husband, Diego Rivera. Yayoi Kusama stages her own gender-bending rabbit hole in Central Park, infiltrating José de Creeft’s bronze Alice in Wonderland. Curators Ilene Susan Fort and Tere Arcq, of LACMA and Mexico City’s Museo de Arte Moderno, respectively, hope to provide a foil to surrealism’s long-standing gender bias—as well as explore how these artists found their greatest inspiration away from the movement’s center, in Paris. “North America wasn’t as bound to social mores and gender roles,” says Fort. “There was just greater freedom.”

Located on Maiden Lane, right off Union Square park, Xanadu Gallery and Folk Art International. Has an extensive selection of Hellenistic jewelry from Turkey and Greece dating from BC4000 to ancient Egyptian art to African and Asian sculpture.

The distinctive architectural features include the arches and the spiral staircase that actually was designed after Frank Llyod Wright finished the plans for the Guggenheim. 

 

Years ago I've been to Oak Park, Illinois, to Wright's home and studio, where you can find all unique art deco, arts and crafts furniture and architecture. I'd like to go see Millard House, in Pasadena, just minutes away from here. His first textile block experiment and closest to Mexican style.

Pasadena'da, sadece birkaç dakika uzaklıktaki Millard Evi'ni de görmek istiyorum. İlk kerpiç denemesi ve Meksika stiline en yakın mimarisi.

Funny but true, I have found these photos on my husband's iPhone :) In summer, when I was away, he took these photos at the de Young Museum San Francisco, Balenciaga and Spain exhibit. This is so not fair that I was not there, yet so promising that my husband is this into fashion :)

More Prints

As I was helping my daughter with her Thanksgiving Pilgrim Project, I started thinking more about beautiful Turkish designs, especially floral ones. This project expects the kids to talk about their family ancestry, when they made the journey to America, from where they came, etc. with this Pilgrim Doll representative :) Ours is a modern pilgrim. Thus, we went with fairly modern clothes :) She is going to sit on a big Turkey map along with a Turkish flag.

Okay, the point is I was looking for something to draw on the skirt that represents our culture. And of course, an elegant tulip design would do the work. If I buy good fabric paints, I might start putting these motifs on my clothes here and there. I have a Tezhip art at home (painted and gifted by my cousin Yasemin). Tezhip is a Turkish illumination art which has symbolic meanings to each color. This art mostly consists of beautiful flower motifs.

Kızıma Şükran Günü Projesi'nde yardım ederken, Türk motiflerini özellikle çiçek desenlerini geçirir oldum aklımdan. Çocukların ailelerini, Amerika'ya nasıl, ne zaman, neden geldiklerini anlatacakları bir proje. Sunuma yardımcı olacak, kendilerini temsil edecek bir de bebekleri olacak yanlarında. Aslında ben bunları yazarken, minik kızım okulda projesini sunuyor olmalı. Bizimki modern bir seyyah bebek. Bu yüzden de geleneksel kıyafetler giyindirmedik ona :) Yanında Türk bayrağı ile büyük bir Türkiye haritası üzerinde duruyor olacak.

Aslında anlatmak istediğim eteğinin üzerine çizmek için aradığımız Türk deseni. Zarif bir lale motifi iyi bir fikir. Kumaş boyası alıp bu desenleri kıyafetlerimin orasına burasına da yerleştirebilirim. Kuzenim Yasemin'in çizip, boyayıp, hediye ettiği bir Tezhip eseri var evde. Tezhip, Türk süsleme, yaldızlama sanatı. Her rengin farklı anlamı var. Çoğunlukla bu sanatta da da çiçek desenleri kullanılıyor.

When I was searching for Turkish prints, I found this beautiful idea and work of Rıfat Özbek. Yastık (Cushion) by Rıfat Özbek. There are three stores; İstanbul, London. Alaçatı. They have all kinds of ethnic designs from all over the world.

Ethnic

Ethnic prints, Navajo, Aztec, Anatolian, tribal, you name it.. Anything with these prints is in now ;) Check Fashionista's detailed editorial here. This top is go.make.noise, local LA brand. I am sure it is going to make big noise. On Friday, I and my daughter had a girls' day out. Biked to a Mexican restaurant, had a big lunch, colored a dog piggybank :) at Color Me Mine, and biked back home half tired, yet very pleased.

When I was browsing Santa Monica Wasteland's racks last Saturday, I found this skirt. "Same as my kitchen carpet" said my sister when we were on skype :D

İyi ses getireceğe benziyor. Cuma günü kızımla birlikte bisikletlerimize atlayıp, bir Meksika restoranında kocaman öğle yemeği yedik. Sonra Color Me Mine'da bir köpek kumbara boyayıp, yarı yorgun ama çok keyifli bir şekilde eve döndük.

Geçen Cumartesi günü Santa Monica Wasteland'de bakınırken, bu eteği buldum. "Aynı benim mutfak halım" dedi kardeşim :D

How beautiful is this crystal spider web? Today is wet outside, spotting this was worth it.

All White in Fall

Today is the first day of Fall, September 22nd. And despite what they say "no white after labor day", I put all white on. I love wearing my silvers all at the same time, nowadays.

First browsed the shelves of TJMaxx and then went to grab a quick lunch from WholeFoods. Fish tacos, yaay! I have to admit that I am a cheap chic and always look for a good deal. But always opt for good quality. Right at this point, TJ Maxx's runway section comes to mind. Ohhhh yeah, most of my designer stuffs are from TJMaxx. You've got it ;), this James Perse tshirt, Oscar de la Renta haircalf belt are from there. Saks online sale events, Off 5th, Last Call Neiman Marcus, and Nordstrom Rack come next.

Bugün sonbaharın ilk günüydü. Buradakiler İşçi bayramından sonra beyaz giyilmez dese de, ben aksine beyaza bulandım. Evet burada Mayıs'ta değil Eylül başında kutlanıyor.

Önce TJMaxx'ın raflarını yine gözden geçirip, WholeFoods'dan hızlıca öğle yemeğimi aldım. Balık takoları, mmmm. İtiraf etmeliyim ki ucuzcu bir giyim meraklısıyım, herzaman en iyi fiyatı bulmaya çalışırım. Ama kaliteli olan içindir çabam :) İşte bu noktada insanın aklına TJ Maxx'ın podyum bölümü geliyor. Evet evet, benim de tasarımcı imzalı kıyafetlerimin çoğu TJMaxx'tan. Hemen anladınız ;) , buradaki James Perse tişörtüm ve Oscar de la Renta kemerim de oradan. I bought these beautiful LAMB sandals for my sister-in-law's wedding last year and never wore it again :( That night, I had a very bad foot issue :P I am literally limping when I put them on. And as you can guess, this was only for photo shooting :) I love them, though.

And at the end I had to change them. We were out to Tim Burton exhibit at LACMA. He is insane, sensitive, loving :)), so weird yet mysterious, and that I adore. We as a family are addicted to his movies. Going to write about some of his collections later.

About the tribal woman on my shirt: I love her, love her make-up, her jewellery, her turban. I love her eyes. Am I in love?? I feel like we become one when I wear it.

Sonunda tabii ki ayakkabıları değiştirmek zorunda kaldım. O gün LACMA'daki Tim Burton sergisine gittik. Çılgın, hassas, sevecen :)), çok tuhaf ama esrarengiz, işte bu.. Ailecek filmlerine bağımlıyız. Sergideki koleksiyonlar hakkında daha sonra yazacağım. 

Tişörtümdeki yerli kadın hakkında ise: çok seviyor, onun gibi hissetmek istiyorum. Makyajına, mücevherlerine, türbanına.. Gözlerine.. aşık mıyım nedir?? Bütün olduğumuzu hissediyorum üzerimdeyken.
